ARTIST'S STATEMENT

These paintings stem from my experience living in a foreign culture. I explore the internal and external worlds as well as the effect these worlds have on each other. The most recurring theme in my work is the emotional reaction of individuals to their often overwhelming urban environment. It is not my intention to paint beautiful, decorative works of art. I am more concerned with searching for clear, symbolic representations of urban reality. I try to give the buildings a feeling of being heavy concrete structures that contrast with the smallness and fragility of the human figures. The people themselves are unpolished, almost brutish, but imbued with an internal thought process, an attempt they are making to comprehend their social situation. The concerns, problems and anguish of the entire world are found on any street corner in any country by any individual and are reflected on a universal scale.
