Richard Boike is an American painter living in the upper right-hand corner of Brazil in the city of Recife.

He paints in acrylics and his inspiration comes from the urban contrasts of the Brazilian Northeast, a region that has historically suffered social exclusion.

 


His artistic career began in music composition and passed through different venues, including musical performances and composition for theater and dance. He has also written and performed theater pieces, and was a member of Theater Oobleck in Chicago. He has written screenplays and has produced and directed a short film. He was a gallery owner for a year and exhibited a series of his drawings in 1993.

At different times in his life he has worked as a stock clerk, a shipping & receiving supervisor, a librarian, a parking lot attendant, a construction worker, a fisherman, a housepainter, a wallpaper manufacturer, a teacher and an English/Portuguese translator.

Born in Detroit MI in 1962, he has at one time or another lived in Seattle WA, Ketchikan AL, Oakland CA, and Chicago IL. In 1994 he married the Brazilian documentary maker Luci Alcântara and moved to the city of Recife in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.
